Article of the Year Award
In 2024, we have introduced a new award to honour the exceptional authors who have published in the journal.
The JLDHE Article of the Year Award recognises one article annually that demonstrates an outstanding contribution to the field of learning development and teaching and learning in general. Nominated articles are required to meet a minimum of two selection criteria.
Selection criteria for the award:
- The article makes an outstanding contribution to the scholarship of learning development in terms of originality, creativity, or ability to shift the boundaries of the field.
- The article demonstrates a rigorous and innovative methodological approach.
- The article is written in an authentic voice that makes complex research accessible and attractive to wider audiences.
- The article is particularly effective in making its points and illustrates excellence in scholarship.
Eligibility and nomination process:
Nominated articles must have been published by the JLDHE in the calendar year preceding the annual ALDinHE Conference.
The Selection Committee comprises members of JLDHE’s Editorial Board, Editorial Advisory Board, and former AoYA winners.
Nominators will support their nomination with a statement outlining how the article meets the selection criteria above.
The nomination period for 2024 awards has closed. We now welcome nominations for 2025 awards.
Our winner of the Article of the Year Award for 2024: Dr Ryan Arthur
Dr Ryan Arthur is Assistant Professor in Higher Education at the University of Warwick and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Arthur, R. (2023) “‘Conscious’ learning development: towards a pedagogy of race-consciousness ”, Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education, (26). doi: 10.47408/jldhe.vi26.928.
I am deeply honoured and humbled to accept the JLDHE Article of the Year Award. I want to thank the reviewers and the editorial team, who recognised the value of my work and provided insightful feedback that greatly enhanced the quality of the article. I hope that this article will demonstrate that the field of learning development can be used as a lens to address the seemingly intractable and ‘wicked problems’ in higher education.
Reviewer of the Year Award
In 2022, we were thrilled to launch the annual JLDHE Reviewer of the Year Awards to recognise and celebrate excellence among our peer reviewers.
Every year we select a reviewer who made exceptionally helpful contributions to the Journal in terms of the quantity, quality, and timeliness of their reviews, as well as their generosity in sharing expertise, their scholarly rigour, and their kindness.
While honouring only one colleague in this way, we also want to acknowledge – as we do in our editorials – that many other reviewers regularly provide outstanding support for the Journal. We are immensely grateful for their hard work, for their time, and for helping us to foster this unique community of Learning Developers committed to excellence in research.
Our winner of the Reviewer of the Year Award for 2024: Dr Vic Boyd
I am so, so grateful to the JLDHE Editorial Board for this hugely appreciated award. Reviewing for the journal brings me an enormous amount of inspiration and fulfilment, and I always learn so much from the process. I feel particularly passionately about the importance of compassion as a reviewer, and always try to put myself in the author’s shoes to make my comments relevant and, I hope, useful. Compassionate feedback on my own writing has had a powerful effect on my scholarship journey and I hugely value being part of such a supportive, nurturing and collegiate community. I really feel this award is for the whole army of JLDHE reviewers as it’s entirely a team effort, but I’ll gratefully keep it safe for you! I strongly encourage all colleagues within the LD community (and beyond) to consider reviewing. It’s a fantastic and rewarding way to feel immersed in and thankful for our professional discipline.
Dr Vic Boyd is a Senior Lecturer APPD at the University of the West of Scotland and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
