A massive thank you to everyone who joined us for our latest Reading Club on 11th September 2024. It was great to be joined by new colleagues to the Reading Club and spend the evening sharing discussions and ideas. In this session, we talked about Tobais Alexander Bang Tretow-Fish, Bjarke Lindsø Andersen, Thilde Emilie Møller, Anne-Mette Nortvig’s What does it mean to prepare for class? A case study on students’ study habits in a nursing educational programme.
This article sparked a wide-ranging and really interesting discussion on a number of different topics. We started by sharing thoughts and ideas on the methodologies employed in the study. There was general agreement that the methodologies were novel and interesting, with the scope to provide unique insights from students. This was furthered by sharing of ideas on how these novel approaches could be made even more robust going forward.
We next discussed the platform that was highlighted as central to the study and the students’ class preparation: Rhapsode. We shared ideas on where and how this was different from virtual learning environments such as Blackboard and Moodle, which it seemed to share many features with. Whilst we noted the potential for how the delivery of activities could be tailored or made bespoke to individual students, through its responsive and adaptive approach, we also largely agreed on the need for more context on why this platform was used in the beginning and how it benefitted students.
Another discussion point that spun off from our discussions on the content of the paper, was flipped learning. We shared our experiences with flipped learning – the benefits and advantages, as well as the practical and pedagogic steps needed for flipped learning to be effective and to encourage student engagement with pre-session materials.
The next Reading Club will take place on Wednesday 13th November at 17:30.
